Asymmetry in farm-retail price transmission in the Australian beef and lamb market
1992
Griffith, G.R. | Piggott, N.E. (New South Wales Agriculture, Armidale (Australia))
Insufficient examination has been made of pricing strategies in the wholesale and retail meat markets in Australia, though recent research has confirmed price levelling behaviour in the market. The suspicion exists that wholesalers and retailers are more inclined to pass on price rises than falls to the consumer and slower to pass on the opposing trend to the producer. The hypothesis of retail and wholesale price asymmetry in the Australian beef and lamb market is tested in this study, using more comprehensive methodologies than were previously available. Information from such studies can be used for better analysis of market dynamics and marketing policy discussions.
