Electronic pseudo-apples and their role in damage reduction during post-harvest handling [review]

The main factors determining the bruise size of apples during handling have been shown to be: magnitude of the impact force; duration of the force; and the failure strength of the apple tissue. These factors have led to the development of 'pseudo-fruit', which measure impact forces with force transducers, and allow rapid, non-destructive collection of data. Research using an instrumented sphere (IS 100 Model) with impact data collected from an apple packing line via a PC is discussed. It is concluded that IS data is useful in determining bruise levels, but more research is needed to investigate the effects of impact surface shape and characteristics on impact variables, as measured by the IS, and bruise potential. IS technology applied to other horticultural produce is evaluated.
