On shale derived soils there appears to be a greater need for phosphorus than for sulphur in the maintenance phase of pasture development. Therefore, a fertilizer containing higher concentrations of phosphorus, but a lower content and availability of sulphur, would be better than plain superphosphate both to establish and to maintain pastures on these low fertility soils.
