Economics of giant clam production in Australia and Fiji and sensitivity factors. [Conference paper]

Results are reported for the mariculture of Tridacna gigas in Australia, both in nursery and ocean phases, and for the ocean phases of T. derasa in Fiji. Assuming that all edible clam meat is marketed, it is concluded that in Australia clam farming could be profitable, though not highly, if harvesting is optimally timed. In Fiji, a positive rate of return depends on the price of the clam seed being kept at low levels, and on low village-level labour costs.
