A contribution to the phenology of Maladera matrida Argaman (Col., Scarabaeidae) in Israel

Maladera matrida Argaman (Col., Scarabaeidae), which was known to damage home gardens and ornamentals in the Tel Aviv area, spread southward and established itself in the Negev. It became a pest of agricultural crops, causing heavy damage to sweet potatoes and groundnuts, on which the grubs feed in the soil. Catches of beetles in black light traps during the years 1989-1991 indicated two peaks of flight, representing two annual flight periods: in May-June and in August-September. The proportion of males in the population was usually approximately 45%, but early in spring males predominated. The number of ovipositing females was low at the beginning of each flight period, but at the peak of adult activity about half the females were ovipositing
