Lesions were found at abattoirs in 38 percent of 10,543 cattle from 1,386 farms, this varying from less than 5 percent in S.E. Queensland to 95 percent on Cape York Peninsula. Prevalence was highest in bulls, intermediate in steers and least in cows. It was higher in Bos taurus than in B. indicus; it increased with age. The distribution of the disease closely matched that of the buffalo fly, Haematobia irritans exigua.
