DAIRYFEED is a profit maximizing computer program which determines the most profitable feeding for dairy herds. The program calculates: the most profitable milk yields for cows; the cheapest rations to achieve these yields; and the daily profit obtained by feeding the selected rations. The rations are calculated for cows in early, mid and late lactation. DAIRYFEED takes account of: the nutritional requirements of cows; the nutritional content of the available feeds; the prices for the available feeds; the price received for milk at the particular time of year; and the market milk quota for the farm. The nutritional requirements for metabolizable energy, protein, fibre, calcium and phosphorus levels, and the calcium to phosphorus ratio are included in the program. Allowance is made for the proportion of heifers in each lactation group. Changes in condition score and liveweight of the cows are included, and the maximum total level of concentrate feeding per cow can be specified. The procedure for operating DAIRYFEED is described.
