The relationship between the fibre diameter distributions of wool top, fibre ends and yarn surface fibres

A technique is presented for measuring the fibre diameter distribution of fibre ends in wool top. Using this technique preliminary measurements of the fibre diameter of surface fibres of yarns suggests that during spinning there is a small bias of the coarse fibre ends to the surface of the yarn. The findings have implications for fabric-evoked prickle where it is the characteristics of the wool fibre ends that is important and not that of the wool as a whole.
