The use of some commonly available lectins as a means of separating Bordetella avium and the B. avium-like organism was tested, and the sensitivity of the 2 taxa to ampicillin, as detected in a disk diffusion test. Lectin agglutination patterns did not prove useful for differentiation. The results suggested that B. avium isolates are uniformly sensitive to ampicillin while isolates of the B. avium-like organism are uniformly resistant, indicating that this a suitable differentiating test for routine diagnostic laboratories.
