Some aspects of selection for staple strength [sheep; wool]
1994
Lewer, R. | Li, Y. (Western Australian Dept. of Agriculture, South Perth. Wool Program and Co-operative Research Centre for Premium Quality Wool)
Data from flocks were analysed to estimate the heritability of several wool quality traits and their correlations with other wool production characteristics. There was an interaction between average fibre diameter and staple strength responses: when the relative economic values for one increased, responses in the other decreased. The results suggested that the coefficient of variation of fibre diameter can be used as an efficient estimator of staple strength. The industry advantage will be in decreased testing costs
