Emphasis is placed on oilseed Brassica species as it was clear from an early stage that these had by far the most potential for vegetable oil production in the Mediterranean environment of south Western Australia. While linseed (Linum usitatissimum) shows good adaptation for rainfed production in southern Australia, its use as an edible oil is limited because of the high linolenic acid content. Linseed has fewer weed and harvesting difficulties than rapeseed but appears to have a relatively low yield potential. Sources of resistance to the disease Pasmo (Sphaerella linorum) have not been identified and, until they are, a limitation exists to the development of an oilseed industry based on linseed.
