Achievements in the establishment of indigenous fruit trees of the miombo woodlands of southern Africa
1995
Maghembe, J.A. (ICRAF, Zomba (Malawi))
In a relatively short time, easy methods for germinating and raising seedlings of important indigenous fruit trees were introduced. It is recommended, therefore, that Bridelia cathartica, B. micrantha, Parkia filicoidea, Diospoyros usambarensis, Piliostigma thonningii, Tamarindus indica, Terminalia catappa, Ziziphus mauritianaand Z. abyssinica be germinated directly after seed extraction and/or cleaning. Strychnos spinosa, Uapaca kirkiana and Syzygium cordatum should be extracted, cleaned thoroughly and soaked in cold water overnight before sowing. Azanza garkeana, Canthium foetium, Diospyros mespiliformis and Bridelia cathartica germinate well following partial removal of the seed coat by nicking. In other studies, Vangueria infausta was found to germinate well after partial removal of the seed coat at the radicle end.
