The antocyans and hydroxycynnamoyl tartaric acids (AICTs) in the skin of 18 redberry cultivars were assayed in 1990 and 1991 by the Istituto Sperimentale Viticoltura at Conegliano, in cooperation with the Istituto Sperimentale Enologia at Asti, in an attempt to classify cultivars by the phenol content in their skins. Main component analysis confirmed the marked genetic basis of these compounds and enabled the characterisation of several cultivars (e.g. Sangiovese, Pinot Noir, Alphonse L.) and groups of cultivars (e.g. Franconia, Aglianico, Pasiga, Grenache, Moscati, Nebbiolo, Montepulciano, Marzemino and Malbech by antocyans and Grenache, Refosco, Dolcetto and others by AICTs) with similar esterified antocyanins and AICTs. Discriminant analysis enabled the identification of several cultivars only by both antocyans and AICTs, the latter proving indispensable for positive determination. Given that year had little effect on their amount in skin, phenols may prove to be important parameters in positive cultivar identification
