Variation in leaf area development and its effect on water use, yield and harvest index of droughted wheat

Genotypes displaying variation in flowering, tillering and early leaf growth were evaluated in glasshouse trials for 4 drought treatments in each of 2 seasons, simulating droughts encountered by field crops. Grain yield varied according to growth and water use before and after anthesis in relation to soil water supply. Harvest index was a non-linear function of the proportion of water used after anthesis. The determinate tillering wheats were largely indistinguishable from conventional wheats in water use when sown at twice the density, but had some advantages when sown at the same density. At both densities they had higher stem and leaf weights, giving a lower harvest index and grain yield, which may reduce their advantages in dry environments
