The effect of NIC supplementation on growth performance, breast characteristics and blood parameters was studied in a trial using 330 broilers (Arbor Acres). These were divided into 2 groups of 120 and 210 each, that differed for population density; 0.07 square m/head, Normal Density (ND), and 0.04 square m/head, High Density (HD). Zero and 150 ppm of NIC were added to a basal diet of maize and soyabean meal for the duration of the trial in the high density (HD) group and for the 9 d prior to slaughter in the normal density (ND) group. At the end of the trial no differences in growth performance were found between ND and HD groups with/without NIC supplementation. The HD group with NIC supplementation had more PUFA in breast fat at the end of the trial. Breast characteristics analyzed at 41 d of age showed a higher protein content (95.39 vs 93,98%; P0.05), a lower total fat (2.99 vs 4.77; P0.05) and a significantly lower cholesterol content (76.29 vs 120.48 mg/100g edible matter; P0.05) in animals with NIC supplementation in relation to the HD control group, but these differences were not found at the end of the trial at 50 d
