Yield responses of wheat and other crops to agronomic practices on duplex soils compared with other soils in Western Australia

A survey of experimental results relating management to yield in the wheatbelt is reported. Increases in grain yield of wheat were generally comparable on duplex and other soil types; early sowing and K applications were more effective on duplex soils, response to added N more variable, the optimum seed rate was greater, and the advantage of semi-dwarf habit apparently less. In a crop-by-soil comparison, wheat, barley and peas yielded less on a duplex soil than on 2 other soils, while lupin yields were unaffected; still wheat was the most productive crop on the duplex soil. Lupin responses may depend on cultivar. Averaged over all crops and locations, duplex soils are no less productive than others in the wheatbelt, though they may require different management to be at their most productive.
