This article solves the problem of the optimum arrangement of sample plots in a tract for the large-area inventory and forest monitoring under the varied conditions being typical of Slovakia. The experiment evaluated in the stand with an area of more than 8,000 ha, where the 2 x 2 km net of tracts was established in such a way as to enable to repeat simulations with a different number of sample plots. The components of variability characterizing the variability of the estimated variable the basal area of the stand per ha (G.ha-1) between and within the tracts and also the costs of the first and the second phases of sampling were investigated. The tracts with 4-6 sample plots with the right angle and star arrangement turned to be optimal from the viewpoint of precision and effectiveness. The combination of permanent and temporary tracts were recommended for the conditions of Slovakia.
