The ME content of a range of dry matter digestibilities of oats was measured at maintenance in sheep. DMD was 66-82 percent and ME content 11.4-15.9 MJ per Kg DM. Lucerne chaff fed as a control had a DMD of 61 percent and ME content of 9.7. The ME-Digestible energy ratio was 0.88 for oats diets, 0.81 for lucerne chaff. Differences were attributed to urine energy and nitrogen loss on lucerne, not reduced methane output on oat diets. Cell wall organic matter and lignin content were strongly correlated with diet digestibility.
