A tank-mix of butachlor with propanil significantly reduced grass weeds and resulted in the lowest weed density and biomass. A proprietary mixture of piperphos and 2,4-DIPE proved as effective as 2 hand weedings for the control of grasses and sedges. For broadleaf weeds no herbicide was better than 2 hand weedings. Hand weeding brought about a 23 percent increase in grain yield over the unweeded control. Piperphos with 2.4-D and butachlor with 2,4-D gave yields not different from those associated with 2 hand weedings. Weed control improved the effective tillers per square metre and the number of filled grains per panicle but did not affect the 1000-grain weight.
