Studies on the inhibition of Penicillium roqueforti in silages under aerobic conditions

Comparative studies in vitro on the inhibition of P. roqueforti by several chemical components were carried out. By using sodium benzoate the applicability of these results to silages was examined in ensiling trials of laboratory scale. It could be shown the the amount of silage additive needed to prevent fungal growth under aerobic conditions not only depends on the pH-value but also on the content of P. roqueforti-progagules and the concentration of undissociated acetic acid at the end of anaerobic storage.
