Diseases in farm animals in relation to Fusarium toxins in feed

A possible involvement of Fusarium toxins in diseases of farm animals, mainly in swine, was investigated for two samples of mixed-feed (mixed by farmers), for cereals (samples of wheat, barley, oats) collected in an area of southwest Germany (1987 harvest), and for some straw samples. All samples were checked for dry matter, mould count, ergosterol content, the Fusarium toxins zearalenone (ZON), a- and b-zearalonol (a-, b-ZOL), deoxynivalenol (DON), 3a- and 15a-acetyl-deoxynivalenol (3a-, 15a-ADON), nivalenol (NIV), diacetoxyscirpenol (DAS), fusarenon-X (FUS-X), HT-2 toxin (HT-2), T-2 toxin (T-2). Some cereal samples were also investigated by the MTT-bioassay. The level of the Fusarium toxins often could not explain symptoms/diseases in livestock. Possible reasons are discussed. The ergosterol content and the result of MTT-bioassay can be helpful for interpretation.
