The major pressures shaping the future of irrigated agriculture in Victoria are resource degradation, economic efficiency and changing market opportunities. While irrigation costs are likely to rise in real terms, this will be offset to some extent by improved technology, a leaner and more efficient delivery and service infrastructure, greater accountability of water suppliers to users, and by the ability to trade water on a permanent and seasonal basis. For some farmers, the ability to buy additional water will represent a significant commercial opportunity, while other farmers will adjust out of irrigated agriculture.
