'Shelly': a new mango cultivar

'Shelly' was selected at the ARO Bet-Dagan experimental orchard, from a cross between 'Tommy Atkins' and 'Keitt'. The original tree is small, and started to bear fruit at the third year after planting. It is a late ripening cultivar, with a harvest season starting from late September to mid-November. The fruit is round with no beak or sinus. Average fruit weight is about 500g (ranging from 350g to 700g). The mature ripe fruit is orange with a red blush. The flesh is juicy, firm and fiberless. The flavor is mild and slightly sweet. Mature fruit has remained firm and attractive up to 30 days after harvest, at room temperature (22-25 Celsius degrees). 'Shelly' is being patented, and budwood can be obtained from the ARO, the Volcani Center, P.O.Box 6, Bet-Dagan 50250 Israel.
