Weed watch : Paspalum vaginatum in golf courses [Selangor, Malaysia]
1995
Lee, S.A. (MARDI, Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia). Basic Research Division)
Paspalum vaginatum is a fast spreading stoloniferous weed found in a number of golf courses in Selangor. The weed is adapted to waterlogged fairways, aprons, greens and the sides of buggy tracks. It spreads rapidly when stem fragments are disseminated in the soil by tractor wheels and the rotating blades of farm implements. The basal core of stems is also a source of regrowth after herbicide application, thus repeated applications do not give total control. Research on its biology and control by MSMA mixtures is in progress, with the objective of developing a one-shot control treatment. In the meantime, the weed continues to make its presence in various golf courses in Malaysia
