Possible applications of biotechnological breeding techniques to improve livestock production in Malaysia
1995
Sharif, H. (MARDI, Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia). Livestock Research Division)
A number of biotechnological breeding techniques available have the potential to contribute towards animal breeding programme in Malaysia. Production of embryos in vitro, multiple ovulation and embryo transfer, and embryo splitting could possibly be some of the biotechniques at present that offer immediate practical application in increasing the population of quality livestock in this country. The application of new technologies such as in vitro fertilization (IVF) coupled with conventional breeding techniques like artificial insemination (AI) could help in enhancing the multiplication of the ruminant population. Therefore, there is a need not only to establish these biotechnologies but to consider how best to use them in animal breeding and production programme in Malaysia
