Mimosine content in Leucaena leucocephala is dependent on the part of the plant in which the sample is taken and ranged from 3.6 percent in young petiols to 8.6 percent in young leaves. The highest level of mimosine content of 12 percent was detected in growing tips of leaves. Mimosine content declined continuously throughout growth and development of the leaf and differences in mimosine content is dependent on leucaena variety. Local goats and cattle were unable to fully degrade DHP and urinary DHP concentrations of the grazing cattle and stalfed goats all exceeded the toxic threshold of 0.1 percent. Oral inoculation of goats with a culture of Synergistes jonesii was able to confer DHP degrading ability and tolerance to high levels of leucaena intake. The AM medium was effective in detecting DHP degrading bacteria from ruminal and faecal samples
