Mortality due to nephritis and uric acid diathesis was often observed during the fall of winter in captive black grouses fed with concentrate feed for pheasants. Mortality due to nephritis and uric acid diathesis was never observed when the fiber and the protein concentrations of the concentrate food (given always with Pinus mugo needles) was 10-11% and 19%, respectively. The physiological values of the uric acid content in faeces from caeca and small intestine of healthy black grouses was 2.2+-.42 mg/g and 60+-12.5 mg/g, respectively. The plasma level of glucose, cholesterol, triglycerides, NEFA, uric acid, urea, total protein, albumine, AST, ALT, AP, Ca, P, and Mg was 16+-2.3 mmol/l, 39+-11.3 mmol/l, 1.6+-.88 mmol/l, 632+-242.2 mEq/l, 475+-115.2 micronmol/l,.97+-.29 mmol/l,. 39+-7.4 g/l, 29+-27.7 micronmol/l, 241+-153 iU/l, 15+-7.9 iU/l, 109+-78.9 iU/l, 3.0+-.33 mmol/l, 2.1+-.50 mmol/l, 1.4+-.44 mmol/l, respectively
