Estimating of diameter distributions
1995
Saborowski, J. (Goetingen Univ. (Germany))
This paper gives a description of a simulation study in five forest stands, where three different estimators (empirical distribution function, kernel estimation, Weibull-estimation) were used to estimate the diameter distributions, based on systematic k-tree samples. Total sample sizes varied from N=18 trees up to nearly 200, each realized by different cluster sizes k and numbers of clusters n. After the introduction and description of the data base some technical details are discussed, which concern ML-estimation of Weibull-parameters, stability and interpretation of simulation results. The next chapters summarize and interpret the results and give rough minimum sample size for each stand and different cluster sizes to achieve a maximum absolute difference between Weibull estimation and true distribution function not larger than 0.2 with a probability of 95%.
