The concern about the future of forest resources led to a call for the introduction of sustainable forest management. A variety of organisations have developed criteria and indicators for the evaluation of sustainable forest management. The project carried out by the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) is the first attempt to field-test these criteria and indicators at the management unit level in a variety of locations. The main objective of the project is to generate a minimum number of criteria and indicators which are reliable, objective, and efficient for each test site. The preliminary results of the tests have shown that there is currently a lack in criteria and indicators related to biodiversity and social aspects. These gaps will be treated in the next project phase. A core set of generic criteria and indicators, which seems to apply to any region, was identified. A certain number of specific, regionally adapted criteria and indicators is required, especially for social aspects
