A study was conducted at the PPPTR nursery to compare the performance of oil palm seedlings under shaded and non-shaded conditions and to evaluate whether 3-month-old seedling could be transplanted to the main-nursery. Measurements on vegetative growth and dry matter content showed that non-shaded seedlings grew better that seedlings under shaded condition suggesting that under good irrigation system, shade is not required in the pre-nursery. Shade is only required under poor irrigation system. The results also indicated that seedlings grown under no shade and transplanted to the main nursery at three months old performed as well as seedlings grown under shade and transplanted at four months old
