Four field trials using Pursuit 50A were implemented for the establishment of leguminous cover crops in three island oil palm replants from November 1993 to March, 1995. Three trials were conducted on cultivated soil and another one on a minimum-tilled field. In all fields, 2-3 rounds of post-emergence herbicides were applied prior to the drilling of legume seeds. Pursuit 50A was tested at 150-400 g ae per ha. The estate standard was included for comparison in all trials. Treatments were applied using calibrated estate spray equipment and trained sprayers. Trial results confirmed that Pursuit 50A at the tested dosage was selective in action to leguminous cover crops. No crop phytotoxicity symptoms on newly planted oil palm seedlings were observed throughout the period of experiments. In all trials, Pursuit treatments gave better legume establishment compared to treatment plots using the estate practice. On cultivated soils, an application of Pursuit 50A either at pre or early-post timing resulted in more than 80 per cent leguminous cover crop. Performance of Pursuit under minimum-tilled field, though less satisfactory, has also provided better legume covers compared to estate practice
