Diversity of orchids in Makawanpur and Parsa district

In a survey, 20 species of orchids were collected from Makawanpur and Parsa Districts of Nepal. Of these, 11 species were monopodials and 9 were sympodials while all were epiphytes. The distribution pattern of these orchid species was quite interesting. Makawanpur was richer with all 20 species while Parsa had only 7 species. Of the total species found in Parsa, majority were monopodials with the exception of one. While in Makawanpur the monopodials to sympodials ratio was 11:9. All the collected species being epiphytes, the most preferred host was Sal followed by Jamun, Mango etc. The population of orchid per site was usually found more in sympodials but in Makawanpur Vanda parviflora, a monopodial species, was found to be highest in number. And the frequency of Aerides multiflorum dominated both in Makawanpur and Parsa. The vegetational preference of orchids has shown that the sympodials prefer the dense vegetation while the monopodials do well in both dense and sparse vegetation.
