State and possibilities of meat and beef production in Slovenia

In Slovenia the agricultural land, with 65 % grassland and 28 % cultivated fields and gardens, presents 43 % of country's land area. The conditions are favorable for milk and beef production. 70 % of gross agricultural output represents livestock production, with 50 % cattle, 30 % poultry, and 20 % pig production. Between 1985 and 1995 the number of cattle in Slovenia decreased by 17.3 %. The amount of market milk yield per cow increased by 46.4 % (from 1,990 l in 1985 to 2,913 l in 1995), which is an average of 4.6 % per year. The quantity of market milk has increased in the last 10 years by 10.6 % and reached 180 l/year per capita. From 1990 to 1994 yearly beef production decreased by 7.8 % and settled in 1995 at 84 % of self-sufficiency. Due to expected intensive production of milk and steady consumption, the number of dairy cows will decrease in future while the number of beef cows will increase.
