Salajka virgin forest after 20 years (1974-1994) [Czech Republic]
1998
Vrska, T.
In 1974 and 1994, detailed measurements were carried out in the Salajka National Nature Reserve in order to monitor developmental changes in a virgin forest stand. The following works were carried out: recording standing and lying trees in a map, mapping of forest types, phytocenological surveys, excavation and description of soil pits, laying-out of transects and making directional photographs. On sites not affected by water a shift was recorded towards more hydrophilous and light-demanding plant communities and on sites affected by water a shift occurred towards communities less dependent on water and more shade-loving. The percentage of silver fir markedly decreased and the percentage of beech increased. The virgin forest stand as a whole, however, exhibits permanent stability in growing stock despite changes in tree species composition.
