Influence of season and host phenology on the Mediterranean fruit fly population fluctuations in the central hills of Israel

This article deals with seasonal fluctuation of a Medfly population in the central hills of Israel (730m altitude) and the effect of host phenology upon it. The study was carried out during the years 1994-1996 (using 74, 131 and 56 traps, respectively), in a 6 km2 area in the surroundings of kibbutz Tsuva. We found that the Medfly temporal patterns in the region have an annual periodicity and that patterns were constant during the three years of the study. We observed two main peaks; a small one in July and second, larger one, in September-October. During the winter and early spring no flies were trapped. During the summer and fall the Medfly population size increased several folds, and it seems to be mainly driven by the sequential ripening of suitable hosts.
