Through the increasing amounts of carbon they immobilize, forest ecosystems play an important role in attenuating the man-made increase of atmospheric carbon dioxide. If carbon dioxide emission remain high in the future decades, forest ecosystems will not be able to avoid a considerable, and long-term increase of atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration
