Effect of Thinnings on the Evaluations of Provenance Experiments as Exemplified by a Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) Trial
1997
Giertych, M. (Polish Academy of Sciences, Kornik (Poland).Inst. Dendrology)
Long term provenance experiments increase in value with time yet loose much of their utility if they are not remeasured regularly keeping records of what is removed in thinning from different plots. A trial established in Poland to demonstrate the point. The overall results and recommendations were the same at the four locations till age 17. Later thinnings brought in a significant provenance x site interaction and a lack of correlations between locations. Each trial seemed to react to the thinnings in a different manner. When the evaluation was made on the basis of cummulative basal area the results were brought to greater conformity
