Cause-effect relationships between magnesium supply and forest damage in spruce stands. First results of the integrated evaluation of German-wide forest condition data

The data base of the German forest soil condition assessment (BZE) is going to be used for an integrated evaluation of the relationships between forest damage, soil condition and nutrient supply to examine hypotheses of the forestdecline research. By a pilot study it could be shown that in principle the data base is suitable for this purpose. As an example for the integrated evaluation the relationship between Magnesium-supply and crown condition (discolouration, needle loss) for spruce is shown in this paper. A suitable indicator for the Mg-availability is the relation between Mg-amount in humus layer and Mg-amount in the main root zone (humus layer plus mineral soil up to 30 cm depth). Humus and Magnesium accumulation in the humus layer caused by reduced decomposition rate accompanied by Mg-leaching from the mineral soil results to Mg-deficiency and visible damage symptoms.
