Present study is focused on different trends in heavy metal distribution in shallow profiles through the bogs. 5 ombrotrophic peatbogs located in the frontier mountains in the Czech Republic were selected. Peat samples were analysed for total concentration of Be, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn using the atomic absorption. In general, three main types of trace element distribution in the vertical profiles were found: 1. Exponential increase of Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni and Pb concentration. 2. Monotonous distribution of metal in peat profile. 3. Concentration of metals increasing with depth. Distribution of metals is influenced by pH, Eh, humic acid content, compression of peat, type of Sphagnum, water level variation, surface vegetation.
