The effect of mulching on botanical composition and species representation in grassland, evapotranspiration and soil moisture content

A field trial was conducted in 1995 to 1997 to study the effect of different systems of grassland use on moisture content and water reserve in soil, on evapotranspiration, herbage yield and botanical composition. Grassland management involved a one-cut system; a two-cut system; a one-cut system + mulching with mown grass after the cut. Soil type is Cambisol, sandy-loam. Changes in stand composition and percentage representation of the particular plant species were variable as a result of different number of cuts and mulch application in addition to the potential effect of the year. A trend of decreasing representation of grasses and increasing representation of dicotyledonous weeds was observed in both cut systems; the one-cut system led to a steep fall of leguminose representation and finally to their complete disappearance from the stand in the third experimental year. A large expansion of Dactylis glomerata was observed on mulched plots while leguminoses started to disappear. Taking into account the variability of soil moisture content, water reserve and evapotranspiration values, the differences resulting from different systems of grassland management are statistically insignificant.
