The big purse seiners are heavily involved in the exploitation of pelagic species in the Java Sea. The fleet have developed sharply after trawl ban in 1980. The evalution towards bigger vessels and bigger engines have enabled the fishery to expand their fishing grounds outside the Java Sea, exploiting the Makasar Strait and southern part of the South China Sea. The fishing activities of this fishery are highly related to the monsoon. Their fishing efforts decrease in the north-west monsoon and increase in the south-east monsoon. During 1988-1994, landings of the big purse seiners have increased by 19.3 percent annually. Six fish commercial categories were landed with the scads as a major group.
