A field experiment was carried out at Jambegede Agric. Res. Stat. (+- 350 m asl. dark grey alluvial), from January up to April, 1992. The objectives of this experiment were to determine the critical period of weed competition of four soybean cultivars and to know the major weed over the area of the experiment. The factorial experiment was arranged on the RCBD, which consisted of two factors, i.e. (i) twelve symmetrical levels of weed free and weedy period and (ii) four soybean cultivars. The duration of weed competition responded differentially by four soybean cultivars as its critical period. It was four to six weeks after planting for cv. Lokon, Tidar and Jayawijaya and five to six weeks after planting for cv. Lokal. The major weed present before planting were Cyperus rotundus (SDR = 28.54), Amaranthus spinosus (SDR = 15.17) and Eleusine indica (SDR = 12.94), and those after planting were of E. indica (SDR = 32.4), A. spinosus (SDR = 20,73) and Cynodon dactylon (SDR = 9.35)
