Study on the closed transportation of live seabass, Lates calcarifer Bloch at different densities
1997
Utojo (Balai Penelitian Perikanan Pantai, Maros (Indonesia))
The purpose of the experiment was to evaluate the optimum density of seabass lively transported in the oxygenated polyethelene plastic bags with the various densities. Seabass collected from natural waters were placed in the storage containers filled with filtered and aerated seawater for a day without feeding prior to transportation. Weight and total length of fish were transported are 25.5 g and 10.5 cm. The healthy of fishes were selected and then transfered to the plastic bags of 60 cm diameter and 120 cm long containing 10 l clean seawater per bag. Three loading densities, namely 10, 30, and 50 ind./bag were tested. Each treatment was replicated three times. Oxygen was added into the bags at the volume of 3 times of the water and bags after being tied with rubber band were then placed inside the fibber glass. The transportation during 7 hours. The result showed that during hours transportation the survival rate of seabass with loading density of 10 ind./bag namely 95.5 percent gave the best result. The survival rate of loading density of 10 and 30 ind./bag were not significantly different (P0.05), but the both significantly different with loading density of 50 ind./bag (P0.05). The loading density of 30 ind./bag were recommendated as loading density of the best to the transportation during 7 hours
