Spain has one of the richest and most diverse horticultural heritage in Europe, which is threatened by the genetic erosion. The aim of the Genebank of the Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV) is to collect and conserve this genetic diversity. Currently, the UPV Genebank maintains genetic resources of different leafy crops of Eurasian or Mediterranean origin, belonging to different families: 76 accessions of celery, parsley, coriander, and fennel (Apiaceae), 233 of lettuce, escarole, chicory, cardoon, and dandelion (Asteraceae), 5 of borage (Boraginaceae), 206 of cabbage, collards, cress, and rockette (Brassicaceae), l06 of spinach and swiss chard (Chenopodiaceae), and 2 of garden sorrel (Polygonaceae). These are mainly landraces kept by the farmers for many years, and present characteristics interesting for breeding. These landraces could be directly marketed or included in programs for breeding quality shortcomings of modern cultivars.
