Processing and utilization of sugi (Cryptomeria japonica D. DON) barks - preparation and grading of fibers

Th raw materials investigated for this study were sugi barks from the debarker of a wood pressing plant that included a small percentage of sapwood. They were air dried to 16 % moisture content then reduced to particles or fibers in a hammermill. The resulting particles and fibers were then graded or separated in a series of screens. - Composite boards were produced from four sets of the graded bark materials; these were: a hammermilled but not screened mixture of particels and fibers (HM), particles, long fibers, and a mixture of short fibers and fines. The board density was 0,50 g/cbm board dimensions were 40 x 40 x 5 mm. Water emulsifiable polymeric diphenylmethane disocyanate resin was use with 10 % resin content based on oven dry weight of fibers/particles. The moduli of rupture (MOR) and elasticity (MOE) in bending, the internal bond strength (IB), and the thickness swelling (TS) after 24-h water immersion of t he boards were tested.
