Protection of slaughter animals is a task of the State Veterinary Administration which is defined in legal rules regulating veterinary care and protection of animals against cruelty. Veterinary inspection is performed by authorities of District/Municipal and State Veterinary Administration. Assessment of result for 1994-l998 showed an increase in the number of inspections carried out by official veterinarians, and at the same time a decrease in the number of imposed remedies and administrative and misdemeanour proceedings. The highest number of inspections were carried out in slaughter pigs, followed by cattle, poultry, sheep, horses, rabbits, and fish.
