Formation of a synthetic prolific mutton sheep line

The aim of work, initiated in 1984, was to develop a multi-purpose synthetic mutton sheep line, characterized by high reproduction performance and fleshiness. Ewes of synthetic prolific wool sheep line 04 and 28 rams of a synthetic Whitehead mutton line 06 constitued the initial breeding material. Estimated genetic and phenotypic parameters were used to develop selection indices useful in further breeding work. They were developed taking into consideration both growth traits as well as USG carcass quality measurements in triple- and quadruple- trait systems. The heritability coefficient of the estimated indices ranged between 0.544 and 0.670
