The paper presents the results of multidisciplinary research on the small, usally outletless depressions, called water holes or melting hollows. The studies were carried out in five agriculturally used study areas, situated within major geomorphologic structures of the Szczecin Pomerania. The distribution, present state, internal structure, vegetation differentation and threats to their existence were analysed on the base of field data. The origin and typology of water holes was discussed, as well as their role for different biota. The rate of disappearance of holes was analysed through comparison of historical and the present maps
