Analysis of rainfall data and their implication on crop production: a case study of northern Sebungwe

Dairy rainfall data from four recording stations in northern Sebungwe was analysed using the Instat statistical package, climatic version, with the objective of identifying an appropriate signal to the beginning of rainy season and using onset data to predict season rainfal and length of the growing season. At all four sations, 20 mm in two consecutive days from 1 November signalled the start of the rains. At each of the four stations, there was no statistically significant relationship between rainfall onset and cessation dates. The date of onset explained more than 50 per cent of the variation in season length at Binga, Kamativi and Siabuwa. However, at Bumi Hills, date of onset explained only 35 per cent of the variation in seasonal rainfall at all four stations. The analysis presented in this paper can be used to improve crop management recommendations in northern Sebungwe.
