Effect of pretreatment of crop residues on the nutrient composition and in situ dry matter degradation in local male buffaloes

Fibrous crop residues(FCR) viz. rice straw, millet straw and maize stover were collected from the western hills of Nepal and studied for the effect of pre-treatment by soaking in water treating with 2 percent ures, 4 percent Ca (Oh)2 and 4 percent NaOH on nutrient composition degradation kinetics and dry matter (DM) disappearance from the nylon bags. Samples were soaked in water overnight treated with 2 percent urea 4 percent Ca(OH)3 and 4 percent NaOh dissolved in water (w/v) and kept overnight. There was a significant effect of chemical pre-treatments on the nutrient composition of all 3 FCR types. Organic matter (OM), crude protein (CP), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fibre (ADF), acid detergent lignin (ADL) and cellulose significantly reduced after treating FCR with Ca(OH)2 and NaOH. Treatment with 2 percent urea increased CP content of the FCR but soaking FCR overnight in water did not have any effect on nutrient composition. However, only NaOH had significantly increased DM disappearance from the nylon bags but not by soaking in water or 2 percent urea. Its effect was clearly seen after 24 h of incubation in the rumen. Disappearance of DM of all 3 FCR types with and without pre-treatment was more than 55 percent. A slight reduction in washing loss was observed by soaking in water over the control. Although potential degradability was above 60 percent in all the cases effective degradability at rate constant c=0.05 was less than 50 percent except in NaOH treated samples. Degradation kinetics was significantly improved by NaOH treatment but not by urea treatment or soaking in water.
